How is poly-lumber furniture made?
Plastic collected from waste such as milk jugs and bottles made generally of HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) are sorted, ground, decontaminated and melted into a chemical slurry that is then poured into molds to make a variety of lumber like pieces. These lumber like pieces are then used to build outdoor furniture much the same was as would be made from real wood.
What prevents the color from chipping, peeling or fading?
In the processing stage, the color pigment is added to the chemical slurry and thus the color is maintained throughout the polywood. Some fading could take place over time, but the change in color would be minimum given the color is embedded throughout the product.
Are the outdoor furniture products shipped fully assembled?
They are only partially assembled, but all pieces have pre-drilled holes and the assembly is easy as it only involves putting the remaining parts together with screws and bolts provided. A full set of detailed assembly instructions are shipped with each item.
How do you clean the poly-lumber outdoor furniture?
It is easy to clean with household detergents that contain some bleach. A little water, a little detergent and a some scrubbing with a brush will do the job just fine. It can be cleaned with a power washer, but caution should be exercised not to apply too much force in one spot as it could mar the surface.
Is poly-lumber outdoor furniture toxic to humans, plants or animals?
No it is not at all toxic. It is essentially the same ingredients as that used in plastic drink bottles. It is an inert material that does not biodegrade, rot or deteriorate in any way and does not give off any toxic chemicals. No toxic chemicals will seep or leach into the soil from polywood outdoor furniture.
Can poly-lumber furniture be painted?
Yes, but remember the paint will only be on the surface of the furniture and thus may chip, peel or fade. It will need occasional refinishing and painting once it is painted.
